The Basic Facts About Siamese Cats

On March 11, 2012, in Cats, Pets, by Anne

Siamese cats are noisy, demanding, very sociable and highly intelligent. Providing you are willing to give lots of time and attention to your Siamese, then this is the breed of cat for you.
However if you don’t spend a lot of time at home, and lead a busy life then the Siamese may not be the ideal pet for you.

Siamese cats can be very vocal and will try their best to join in conversations with you! They make very loud noises that have been compared to the sound of a baby crying.

They originate from Siam which is now known as Thailand and have been around for hundreds of years. At one time only royalty were allowed to keep Siamese cats and the King of Siam had many of them in his palace. Today they are a very popular breed of cat and can be found in many countries worldwide.

There are two main varieties of Siamese. The oldest is the Applehead or Traditional breed. These are thought to be descendants of the royal palace cats. They are characterised by a round apple shaped head, with round eyes and ears that are in proportion to their body. Their body shape is stocky and athletic.

The Wedgehead is a result of selective breeding, and these cats have triangular shaped heads with almond shaped eyes that are slanted. Their ears are large in proportion to their head, and pointed. Unlike the Traditional Siamese, these cats have lean, slender bodies with a long whip-like tail.

Siamese cats have stunning blue eyes that don’t have the same depth of vision that other breeds of cats have. Their night vision isn’t as good either, so it’s unlikely that your Siamese will be outside hunting at night.

The Siamese is an extrovert breed of cat and loves to play. They don’t enjoy their own company and hate being alone. If you have other cats in the house your Siamese will be sociable towards them, but will try to be the dominate cat. They love human company and adopt a favourite human in the family.

A lot of people admire a beautiful aquarium. They will stand a watch the colorful fish constantly. If this is exactly what you happen to be wanting to put together, then there are a few things you need to understand related to aquarium systems before beginning. Invest time to perform a little planning and save a good deal of time, frustration and wasted cash.

First thing you have to decide is whether or not you want a freshwater or saltwater aquarium. Here we’ll be discussing mainly about freshwater aquarium systems. So let’s get started. Here are the basics that make up aquarium systems.

The Tank and Stand

It may look evident to many that you must have a tank as well as a stand for virtually any aquarium. The fact is, there are lots of possibilities and you should do a bit of planning before buying. Think about what you want in an aquarium. Would you like fresh water or saltwater, single species or maybe a community tank. Exactly how much room do you have for the aquarium. Virtually all of these decisions and questions should be addressed prior to you making any purchase.

Fish tanks nowadays are constructed of glass, acrylic as well as plastic. Most have their unique positives and negatives. Glass is easily the most common however larger tanks will get quite heavy. Their designs are restricted to square or rectangular. Acrylic tanks are the most expensive however they are lighter and can also be manufactured into many different styles for some really exceptional tanks. I would steer clear of the plastic tanks since they scratch very easily, the view is often distorted plus they could become discolored.

Tank Filters

Filters play an important function in every aquarium tank. They’re major job is to enhance the nitrogen cycle by promoting bacteria development, get rid of debris and waste as well as aerate the tank. At first the many filter choices available may appear quite confusing nevertheless it’s not really that complex.

There are 3 types of filtration systems. Mechanical filtration removes solid waste materials and debris from the water. Biological filtration converts hazardous ammonia along with food debris into much less hazardous nitrites and nitrates. Finally, chemical filtration maintains your aquarium water clean and sparkling.

Fortunately today’s systems are becoming better and many of these filtering methods are actually merged into one system. Perform some research into various aquarium filter systems before you choose one.

Heaters and Thermometers

If you are planning to own any sort of tropical fish in your aquarium you need to have a minimum of one heater. The main kinds of heating units are submersible heaters, non-submersible heating units as well as an undergravel heating cable.

If the heater you decide on doesn’t have a integrated thermometer you can easily get them separately. Here again there is a good choice – hanging, stick-on, floating, digital and wireless.

Lighting

You typically need some light for the fish tank. Many people go for a hood with their tank that features a built in light. There are wide ranging lamp possibilities depending on exactly what illumination effect you would like to achieve.

Aquarium kits

Should you be just beginning with your first aquarium system, you might want to opt for an aquarium kit. It is essentially a system-in-a-box. You need to very carefully read what’s included but normally they will likely include: aquarium, form of filtration, cover, lights, heater, thermometer and water conditioner. All you have to add is some gravel or other substrate, a few decorations or aquarium plants and the fish.

German Shepherd Dog’s Skin

On November 12, 2011, in Dogs, Education, Pet, Pets, Science, by Hansen

The skin under the German Shepherds fur can be highly sensitive. Avoid aggressive scrubbing while bathing your dog or you can remove too much of the natural oils that protect both skin and hair follicles.

Adding powder or scents that aren’t formulated for use with dogs adds the potential for skin irritation or infection. If a product isn’t made for dogs or the type of fur on your dog breed, then make it a rule never to use it.

Be patient when grooming. Take time to talk gently to your pet, rub his head or tummy and lend a playful quality to the grooming session. If you’re rushed or impatient, then don’t even start the grooming. Your German Shepherd will pick up on your attitude and be fearful or difficult to manage.

Even if your German Shepherd dog spends most of his time outdoors, you still need to do basic grooming. Without regular bathing, your dog is at the mercy of fleas and parasites that thrive on his lack of cleanliness.

Use the right tools. Don’t use your old hairbrush on your dog. Get special brushes and combs that are made for your dog’s fur. You don’t save money using your castoffs if you damage the dog’s skin and create a big vet bill.

You might save some money by bringing the dog to a groomer monthly or alternate weeks, while you handle the bath and simple hair brushing on the other weeks. German Shepherd Dog grooming is an essential part of maintaining your dog’s health – as well as his good looks.

Dog Weight Loss To keep Your Canine Healthy

On October 3, 2011, in Dogs, Pets, by Bob W

Dog weight loss what next? It stands to reason that we have record numbers of overweight people world wide and it was just a matter of time before this flowed on to our canine friends.

As a world of pet lovers we think that by showing our dogs how much we love them we need to give them food and it is not even dog food we are feeding our pets it is human food.

In the morning when people have toast and see their dogs licking their lips so we give them half the toast we were eating. Usually spread with butter and marmalade and the treats that were only given occasionally now make up part of their diet.

Manufacturers know that we indulge pets and have pandered to this by making chocolate chip cookies for dogs and chocolate drops when it used to be a bone or a liver treats which wouldn’t be half as fattening as the treats that contain chocolate suitable for dogs. The dogs that used to be exercised daily has dropped to the occasional walk on a weekend and that is the reason that dog weight loss is needed.

Not surprising studies have shown a rise in the number of dogs with diabetes and arthritis. The dogs body burdened with the extra weight places too much strain on the joints making it painful for the dog to walk any distance.

If we do not take dog weight management seriously we will end up with animals that will require costly vet visits and a dog that requires insulin shots a couple of times a day.

Australian Made Dog Nail Groomer (Rotary) – For anyone who is familiar with Dremel tools, you will know that the nail care device is based on exactly the same concept. As opposed to using a nail clipper to snip each nail off, the rotary dog grooming tools rotates quickly and enables you to sand your dogs nails down. This is much less traumatic for your dog, and prevents nails being cut at the quick, which may cause pain and bleeding.

De-Shedding tool – It’s a comb-style brush, with just one row of tines that is specifically designed to get rid of shedding fur. With just one row of tines, it makes less complicated to remove fur without all of it getting caught in a comb, making it tougher to remove.

Matting Comb – This is a brush that is actually a number of needle-like spikes. This can be used on dogs that shed considerably, and if used with a rolling motion can pick up a lot of hair. Be extremely careful with such tools, as the sharp points can harm and break the skin once they poke you.

Dog Slicker – This is a dog comb that is especially designed to remove hair in the dog’s undercoat, while at the same time preserving the hair of the topcoat from being removed. When dogs shed, it is the undercoat which should be groomed, and owners often utilize a typical comb which removes more of the topcoat than is necessary which is not suitable for your pet dog.

Undercoat Rake – Just like the slicker, it is a dog grooming tool which is developed specifically to remove the shedding and loose hair on the dog’s undercoat. You’ll find different shapes and widths, based on the size of your puppy.

Shedding Blade – This is a loop-style tool that has a double purpose of helping eliminate shedding hair as well as also helping in water removal after the dog has been bathed. The smooth side is used almost like a squeegee to slick off extra water from the coat.

Flea Comb – It is a very fine-toothed comb for use in the elimination of fleas. The fine tines on the comb help comb out the dog’s fur and make it easier to get rid of fleas.

People who are into dogs know how important dog accessories are. In fact, many dog lovers even contend that buying dog accessories gives the same satisfaction as shopping for accessories is to women. Today, there many dog accessories available in the market and choosing the best dog accessories can be very wearisome.

Most dogs love playing, and just like children, love being spoilt. It is especially important if you are away for long periods of time that your dog has something to play with. It’s best to give them a variety of toys; this will keep them away from your slippers! Again the most important thing is the size. Treats and toys should be size appropriate. If the toy is too big they won’t be able to play with it and it won’t be fun for anyone.

There is a wide variety of toys for you dog to chew, play and bite. Spend some time choosing some fun toys for your dog. These are the most important accessories you will need for your dog. There are many more things you could buy your dog but by catering for the items on this list your dog should have everything he needs to be a healthy, happy dog.

If you live in a big city like New York (Manhattan), Chicago, or other urban area, you’ll need to purchase that miracle of modern doggie convenience the “pooper scooper.” Most cities have laws against owners simply allowing their dogs to “foul the footpath” or leave little Poodle Bombs all over the city park. In some cities there is a hefty fine for such crappy behavior.

Dog Health Tips

On July 20, 2011, in Pet, Pets, by dog health

The first rule in taking care of your dog is: When your dog is sick, take him to a veterinarian! Use with caution advice of friends or people who are supposed to be “old, experienced dog breeders.” Only a veterinarian is qualified to diagnose trouble and prescribe treatment. However, it is your job to keep your dog from getting sick. Let us assume you start with a puppy. You should know something about “shots”, worm medications, flea powders, and poisons.

A dog’s water consumption varies according to the climate to his activity, and to the composition of his meals. Heat and exercise dehydrate him quickly. He gets very thirsty in cars or any confined space. However, excessive thirst for not good reason should be reported to your vet, because it may be an early symptom of diabetes or kidney trouble.

Milk causes diarrhea in an adult dog” Milk is healthy for all dogs. A bowl of milk with a beaten egg yolk and a couple of pieces of whole wheat toast or dog biscuits is a standard supper dish in many kennels. There are various causes for diarrhea, including internal parasites, indigestion, a change of diet, food poisoning, certain contagious diseases- and sometime, but not always, milk. Knowledge and concern are important in feeding a growing puppy whose nutrition is the foundation of his future health. But common sense is all you need to feed an adult dog correctly, as his own experience will help guide you most of the way.

At home he should have a clean, full water bowl next to his food dish, another in his play area, and possibly a third one that is accessible at night. Away from home the problem is more difficult. A thirsty dog is attracted to water in the gutter, in stagnant pools and rain puddles. Clean rain water is fine, but hard to find.

You have two options when it comes to chicken coops – you can either buy a pre-built one from the stores or build one yourself. The choice is almost unanimous among poultry farmers – definitely build a chicken coop yourself. Why? First of all, it costs so much less. You can even recycle old things you have around the house and save even more. Second, building your own coop allows you to customize the coop to your own specifications. You can have it as big or as small as you like, and you can add whatever features you need. Lastly, nothing beats the feeling of pride and accomplishment after finishing an entire chicken coop with your own two hands.

Do you have pet insurance?

ASPCA pet health insurance can be found in a variety of different plans that can meet the needs of each different pet owner’s situation and the amount of pets in the household. Pet insurance is an important purchase for pet owners who want to take the best care possible of their pets. There are plans that provide cheap pet health insurance, only covering costs if the pet becomes injured or ill, while others are more expensive but cover a variety of different visits, vaccinations and other services so that the individual does not have to foot the entire bill.

There is a safety plan under ASPCA pet health insurance that provides the very minimum coverage needed for a pet. This plan covers the medications needed to treat and injury as well as any X-rays and other diagnostics needed to be able to treat an injury to a pet. This plan will also usually cover the surgical procedures needed and any housing of the pet on the veterinary hospital premises during and after the procedure, as well as any dental services or euthanasia if that is what is needed after an injury has occurred.

I know there are a lot of people out there who think having a pet can be a hassle. It is true that pets can take a lot of work, but the benefits they give outweigh that concern. I think that people who worry about the commitment of having a pet may want to re-evaluate that stance. Having pets in the home can actually be a good thing. Pets teach children responsibility. Pets keep people company. Pets are proven to help cheer people up and battle loneliness. It doesn’t matter what kind of pet you get, but I recommend the cute and cuddly kind. They may require care, but they give a lot of love in return.

Beagle Training Mistakes to Avoid

On June 1, 2011, in Pets, by caro2

Beagle training can sometimes be difficult due to their short attention span. Here are a couple mistakes to avoid when trying to train your beagle.

Don’t Punish

Punishment to dogs is confusing and threatening. It gives them the feeling that they’re not wanted or don’t belong. They usually don’t even understand why they’re being punished. While you might have to be stern and avoid rewarding bad behavior, try to avoid punishing (hitting, yelling, etc.) when your dog fails to obey. Beagles can be mischievous…and those sad eyes can make your heart melt. Nevertheless, you can stand your ground without being mean or harsh to your dog. Beagle training is a process for you and your dog.

Avoid Confusion during Training

Another common mistake is allowing more than one person to initially train the dog. Don’t confuse your dog with different voices and commands. Teach your children not to say variations of the command you’re trying to teach. For example, if you’re teaching him the word “potty” they shouldn’t try to teach him the word “peepee.” Or the words “sit” and “down” shouldn’t be confused with one another. It will only confuse him. Instead, teach the puppy one command (with only one word) at a time until he learns it well. Wait until he obeys that command without hesitation; then move on to the next one. Allow a couple of weeks for each command to settle in properly.

Avoid these two common mistakes while beagle training so you can teach your dog using the correct methods!

If ease of transportation and ability manoeuvre a coop is a key consideration for you, then instead of putting all of your money into a large chicken coop construction project, consider a small to medium sized series of chicken coops on wheels. You see, there are no rules when it comes to how many chicken coops you can actually own or build. Not only are these easy to put together, but they offer any chicken keeper a great deal of flexibility when it comes to positioning in the backyard. Want to move your chickens to a nice shady area? That’s absolutely no problem? Want to move them to an area with more sunlight? Again, it’s no problem when you have a chicken coop on wheels you can move from one place to another.
