Free virus protection
is not necessarily any worse than the security programs you pay for, but you are welcome to more value when you actually spend money. Support opportunities are fewer, security updates are often not as often and some programs also come with less functionality than in an equivalent pay variation.

It does not mean that free virus protection programs are useless. You can actually get pretty good protection, provided that you select the right program.

Avira AntiVir Personal came out of the test. The highest number of threats detected and was also the fastest. The interface is not the most user-friendly, but the review panel felt that in this case, function over form.

A good number two is Avast Antivirus Home Edition. Here you get good protection without the annoying commercials that exist in Avira tools. But even here the user interface is nothing to write home about.

AVG Free 8.5 comes in third. AVG program is a lot easier to use than the other two programs, but it is a little behind them when it comes to security and protection.
