Junk Food Is All in Your Child’s School Menu and It’s All over TV. What Do You Do As a Parent?

When children are obese, it’s almost never good news. Consider this headline from a recent medical research report – Children who are given free access to junk food snack on it three times a day and it accounts for a third of all their daily calories. American children are losing their way when it comes to learning mealtime discipline. When three meals a day and three or four snacks a day become routine in a child’s life, it’s easy for a doctor to find a dysfunctional eating pattern there. With an extra 200 calories a day from junk food, it’s no wonder that American children have a serious problem with childhood obesity.

Doctors and public health officials on TV are pretty clear who’s at fault in all of this is – it’s the fault of the parents who buy their children junk food and perhaps don’t exercise enough restraint or concern over how the children don’t get enough exercise. One does have to be aware though that it takes a village. Problems in the entire system make it difficult for parents to exercise control. For instance, cafeteria meals and schools use lots of high-fat products because they get it cheaply from federally subsidized sources -there’s lot of cheese and grease in school lunches. The agricultural system makes fruits and vegetables more expensive and sugar and refined starches cheap. And of course, with exercise, more difficulties are faced at a time when public parks and exercise facilities are quickly disappearing or becoming unsafe to use in inner-city neighborhoods.

There are debates starting up in the public domain on finding a way to ban junk food advertising, on taxing soda and products like chips and so on. That will be a tough sell and it could take years before moves such as these gain any traction. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that there are a few things you can do yourself right now without waiting for society to catch up. The first thing you can do is to be a great role model yourself. It’s difficult to get your kids to learn restraint when they see you vegged out in front of the TV with picante dust on your lips. Do push-ups in front of the kids, and don’t watch TV any more than you want your children to watch it. And ban high sugar stuff around the house. And that includes the juice boxes as Michelle Obama says.
